Student Life
Trinity Waconia parents say that Trinity is more than just a school. Much of the more is made up of the events, celebrations, and relationships that characterize student life at Trinity. Read on to discover how very formative (and fun) the more can be!
Athletics
Trinity offers a complete athletic program for boys and girls, including cross country, volleyball, basketball, intramural soccer, and intramural lacrosse. The athletic program is designed to develop Christian character through team sports and to train student-athletes––spiritually, academically, and physically.
Our teams compete in the MLAA (Minnesota Lutheran Athletic Association) and in some sports, against area public and non-public schools. The teams are coached by faculty members, volunteer parents, or volunteer friends of Trinity. Exhibiting Christian sportsmanship is a high priority, and student-athletes are encouraged to witness their faith with their words and actions, including hard, aggressive, and fair play.
“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8
Fine Arts
Extracurricular fine arts opportunities supplement curricular activities and offer students the chance to extend their fine arts experiences beyond the school day.
Drama
Each school year, Trinity’s Drama produces a large student production. The drama program at Trinity provides opportunities for students to participate in several different facets of theater production. Students try out for acting roles, or they may also help by running sound and lights, doing hair and make-up, or serving as a student director. This performance is directed by Mrs. Ellie Schulteis. Recent productions have been Cinderella and the Candy Kingdom (2018), The Beatles Slept Here (2017), and Snow White and the Seven Fairy Godmothers (2016).
Music
Music is a key component of the curriculum at Trinity. All students in K-5 receive general music education, and K-4th grade students participate in choirs. In addition, students may elect to participate in one of the following music performance groups:
- Band (Grades 4-8)
- Choir (Grades 6-8)
- Handbells (Grades 6-8)
- Praise Team (Grades 6-8)
Faith & Friendship
As a Christ-centered school, we place high value on the practice of faith and friendship. In our effort to foster faith in individual students, we make corporate worship a part of our weekly faith practice at Trinity. Additionally, an annual ministry theme and our Family Groups each play a critical role in shaping a life of faith in Christ in our students.
Worship
Trinity incorporates worship into the lives of our students by gathering for a chapel service once each week. We assemble in Trinity’s Worship Center. Worship is led by school classes, LCMS pastors, and other church professionals. Weekly Chapel is held most Wednesday afternoons and begins at 1:50 pm and lasts for about 30 minutes.
Parents are encouraged to worship weekly with their families. If you do not have a home congregation, we warmly welcome you to consider worshiping at Trinity.
Annual Ministry Theme
Each year our chapel content and community life are guided by a theme verse. In the 2022-2023 school year, during Wednesday chapel and in the classroom, we are exploring what Scripture says about Making Disciples for Life.
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
Family Groups
At Trinity, a sense of community extends throughout the building. This is largely due to the formation of Family Groups each school year. A Family Group is made up of an 8th grader, who serves as the leader of his/her Family, and typically a student from each grade below (PS-7).
Together, Family Groups:
- Worship together in chapel
- Participate in a monthly Family Group special events. Sometimes this means eating lunch together, while other times it may be doing a service project or character building activity.
- Learn to practice grace and friendship with Trinity students they might not otherwise encounter.
We credit much of the camaraderie at Trinity to the success of our Family Group program. It is a remarkable opportunity for older students to learn to serve and to lead by example, and it is a unique opportunity for younger children to develop affirming relationships with older students.
The value of our Family Groups can hardly be described; it is something to be experienced!
Celebrations
We love to celebrate at Trinity! While there is no shortage of celebrations throughout the school year, the entire school gets particularly excited about these annual events each year.
Chroma Dash
Each year Trinity students partner with Trinity Waconia Child Care to kick off the school year with a fun run. While our younger students have a bike day “marathon,” our K-8 grade students venture through a fun course filled with exciting obstacles. Proceeds from this event are used to enhance student resources and equipment.
Legacy of Learning
Every young learner deserves the stellar educational opportunities provided at Trinity. This event raises funds that ensure finances are not a barrier to the education a student desires with 100% of the proceeds going toward Trinity’s Financial Aid Fund. It is an evening of affordable entertainment, community building, amazing music, a delicious dinner, door prizes, and a silent auction.
Trunk or Treat
Typically held the Friday before Halloween, Trunk or Treat is an outreach opportunity to the community. Trinity partners with many local groups including the Sheriff’s office and Mayer Lutheran High School to provide an evening of free fun for families. At this event you will find yourself enjoying a hay ride and exploring creative trunks filled with treats and games, all provided by a community of parents and church members.
National Lutheran Schools Week
To honor the teachers who serve their students and to celebrate the value of a Lutheran education, Trinity and Lutheran schools across the U.S. celebrate National Lutheran Schools week in the last week of January each year. At Trinity, dress-up days, a special chapel service, an organized service event, and celebrations in individual classrooms mark this celebratory week.
Trinity Track & Field Days
Trinity’s spring Track & Field Days are celebrations that mark the coming of spring and the near-end of the school year. One can find the usual track and field events, but there are a lot of fun activities and community-building particulars that characterize these events.
8th Grade Graduation
Because Trinity students graduate from their beloved school to move on to high school, we mark the significance of their accomplishments and their transition with a formal graduation ceremony. It is a sweet time of remembering and an opportunity for 8th graders to reflect on their growth and to receive a blessing as they take their firm foundation with them into high school.
Service
Because Christ came to serve, so we actively seek to be in service to each other and our communities. Trinity offers a number of ways in which students may serve the community. Annual opportunities include:
- classroom service projects
- Family Group service projects
- financial support for chapel mission projects
- regular, specified projects
Some of the organizations/projects that Trinity students have supported during the 2018-19 school year include Waconia Retirement Communities, Feed My Starving Children, Waconia United Food Shelf, Children’s HopeChest, and Arrive Ministries.
6-8 Grade Trips
While every grade, Preschool-Grade 8, enjoys field trips, students in 6-8 grades may elect to join an extended class trip.
- Washington D.C. History (7&8, every other year)
- Camp Omega (6)
At the end of 7th or 8th grades, students may elect to enjoy an extended school trip to Washington, D.C. with their peers, teachers, and parents. The trip happens every other year, allowing all students the opportunity to attend during either 7th or 8th grade. As they have time and interest, students have the opportunity to participate in fundraising events prior to the trips.
The Washington D.C. trip grants students an up-close experience with American government and history. Students visit the Smithsonian museums, the U.S. Capitol, the new Bible museum, and other monuments and landmarks in the nation’s capitol.
